What reaches us

Data we collect

Everything on this page starts with a short list. If you sign up for the weekly brief, we hold the email address you typed. If you write to the newsroom, we hold the name, email address and message you sent. If you only read, we still receive the technical data any browser sends when it asks for a page.

That is the whole list. We do not ask for a phone number, a postal address or a date of birth, and we do not buy reader lists from data brokers to match against yours. A story tip about a franchisee, a supply dispute or a brand promotion is treated the same as any other message: it arrives in the newsroom inbox and stays there rather than being fed into a marketing list.

What we hold, and where it comes from

Newsletter email

Given by you when you subscribe to the weekly brief.

Contact details and message

Name, email address and the text you submit through the newsroom form.

Technical data

Your IP address and the pages you request, generated by your browser as you read.

One desk, one inbox Reader mail, story tips and corrections all land in the same place at 315 E 29th St, Brooklyn. Nothing in that inbox is added to a mailing list without you asking for it.

Purpose and limits

Why we collect it

Newsletter addresses are used to send the digest you asked for. That is the only mail we send from that list, and it goes out on the same schedule every week rather than whenever a story breaks.

Contact form submissions are used to answer you, including story tips and corrections. If a correction concerns a published piece, we may keep the exchange with the rest of the correspondence about that article. Technical data is used to keep the site loading and to block abuse, such as automated traffic that repeatedly pulls pages or tries the same form with junk input.

Nothing beyond those three jobs is done with your details. We do not profile readers to sell advertising segments, and we do not use an email address from a news tip to send that person a subscription pitch.

The weekly brief

Your address is used to deliver the issue you subscribed to, and nothing else is appended to that sending list.

Newsroom replies

A tip, a question or a correction request is answered and then kept with the rest of the correspondence on the matter.

Site operation

Request logs help us spot broken pages and stop automated abuse of the forms and archives.

Where data goes

Sharing and disclosure

We do not sell personal data, and we do not share newsletter addresses with advertisers. If a sponsor appears alongside the weekly brief, the sponsor sees the issue and nothing about who opened it. We also do not pass reader details to the companies we report on, whether the story is about a manufacturer, a franchisee or a brand marking a milestone.

Data may be handled by service providers that host the site or deliver email on our behalf, and those providers process it only for that purpose under their agreements with us. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of the publication and its readers.

Never sold

No reader list, tip inbox or contact record is sold or rented to a third party.

Service providers only

Hosting and email delivery are handled for us and used for that purpose alone.

Legal requests

Where the law compels disclosure, we respond within what it requires and no further.

How long we keep things

Retention

Keeping data is a decision, not a default. Each record below has a reason attached: the brief because you asked for it, correspondence because answering takes time and checking facts takes longer, logs because abuse leaves traces worth spotting.

Record Kept for
  • Newsletter subscription While the subscription is active, then removed after you unsubscribe
  • Unsubscribe record A minimal note kept so we can honor the request
  • Contact form message As long as needed to handle the matter, plus a reasonable period afterward for reference
  • Technical logs A limited period, then discarded

If your message becomes part of a correction or a published clarification, the exchange may be kept alongside the article record. You can ask us to delete your contact details at any point, and we will tell you what that request does and does not cover.

What you can ask for

Your rights and choices

You can unsubscribe from the newsletter using the link in any issue. That link works immediately and asks nothing else of you.

You can also ask us to delete your contact details or newsletter address by writing to NicholasWillis@vinnykeates.com. Say which address or message you mean; we may ask one confirming question so we do not act on someone else's request.

Depending on where you live, you may additionally hold these rights

  • Ask what personal data we hold about you, and receive a copy.
  • Have inaccurate details corrected.
  • Ask for deletion of a record we no longer need.
  • Object to a particular use of your data.
  • Withdraw consent for the newsletter at any time.
  • Ask us to restrict how a record is used while a question is resolved.

We respond to requests within the time required by applicable law. If we cannot act on a request, we explain why in plain terms rather than leaving you without an answer.

What we do, and what we cannot promise

Reasonable care, honestly stated

Security

We take reasonable measures to protect the data we hold, including limiting access to what is necessary to operate the site. In practice that means only the people who need a record to run the site or answer your message can open it, and access is removed when that work ends.

No method of transmission or storage is free of risk, and we cannot promise that data will never be affected by a security incident. If a breach affects your personal data, we will notify you as required by law and describe what we know at that point.

Keeping this page current

The Cookie Policy describes how cookies are used alongside the practices described here. If you want to reach a person about any of it, the newsroom can be contacted through the contact page.
