Opening note

What these terms cover

Vinny Keates — Global Brief is an independent English-language news blog covering world affairs, politics, economy, justice and consumer business, including a regular beat on the Shipley Do-Nuts franchise. This page is the legal agreement between you and the publication. It explains what you may do with our reporting, what we ask you not to do, how we handle corrections, and where our responsibility ends.

The terms apply the moment you load a page. If you keep reading, that counts as acceptance. You do not have to submit anything, register an account, or send us a message to be bound by them.

Reading and sharing

Use of the site

Non-commercial sharing is welcome; wholesale republishing is not.

You may read, link to, and share our articles for personal and non-commercial purposes. Quoting a paragraph with a link back to the article is fine, and so is sharing on a social network, a forum, or a mailing list you belong to. Pointing people to the original page helps us keep the reporting in front of readers.

You may not republish substantial portions of our reporting without permission. That covers copying a full article onto another site, running it inside an app or newsletter, translating it, or squeezing it into a video script or podcast without telling readers where it came from. Nor may you present our work as your own — that includes dropping our byline or passing our observations and quotes off as your own reporting.

Automated scraping that places load on the site is not permitted. If you are building a research index, a media-monitoring service, or a dataset and you want to include our reporting, write to us first and describe what you need; in many cases we can point you to a workable route.

Reporting and corrections

Content and accuracy

Our reporting is produced in good faith and sourced as described on our Editorial Standards page. News develops, and articles reflect what was known at the time of publication. Some stories change shape the same day, and a piece we published in the morning can be out of date by the evening.

We correct errors when they are identified, and the corrected version supersedes earlier text. Where a correction changes what a reader would reasonably have taken from the article, we note what was changed rather than quietly replacing the paragraph. Older articles are not rewritten to match later events — they stay as filed and any later development is covered in a new piece.

If you believe something is wrong, write to NicholasWillis@vinnykeates.com with the page address and the specific point in question. Corrections are our business, not an embarrassment: a reader who takes the time to flag a mistake is doing the publication a favour.

Three things to know

Articles carry the date they were filed. Read the date before you treat an article as today's position.

Corrections are noted on the article they correct, not collected on a separate page.

We flag where a report relies on another outlet, and we name that outlet in the article.

Ownership and quoting

Intellectual property

Text, headlines, and original reporting published on this site are our property unless otherwise stated. That includes the structure we build around the reporting — the running heads, captions, tables and indexes that make a beat easy to follow.

Quotations for criticism, comment, or news reporting are permitted as allowed by applicable law, provided the source is credited and linked where practical. A review can quote the passage it is discussing. A rival outlet can quote the finding and point back to our story. What does not work is copying the whole piece and calling it a round-up.

Third-party material remains the property of its owners. Photographs we license, pictures supplied by agencies, and documents published because they are part of a story all keep their original rights. If you need to reproduce something of ours commercially, ask first — permissions usually take less time than people expect, and often come with a plain answer either way.

The names, wordmark, and page layouts on this site are also ours. You may refer to the publication by name in your own writing, but you may not use our wordmark or page design in a way that suggests your site is ours or that we endorse what you publish.

On the wrong side

Prohibited conduct

We may restrict access where these terms are violated. In practice that means blocking a scraper, closing a contact channel that is being abused, or shutting down an account if one is ever created. It is a last step, not a first response.

What we ask you not to do

  • Unauthorized access Trying to reach the site or its systems without permission, or probing them for weaknesses.
  • Interference Any request pattern or script that slows the site down or disrupts it for other readers.
  • Unlawful or deceptive content Submitting material that breaks the law, impersonates someone else, or is written to mislead us or our readers.
  • Contact form misuse Using the contact form to distribute unsolicited commercial messages, bulk mail or link spam.

How the reporting reaches you

From the page to your screen, unchanged

Every article is filed once and published as written. We do not run sponsored copy inside the news pages, and we do not sell placements in the beats. Where a piece mentions a company — including the Shipley Do-Nuts franchise coverage or any other business we report on — it is there because it is part of the story. If you see something on this site that reads like an advertisement, tell us where.

Limits and exceptions

Limitation of liability

The site is provided on an as-is basis. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted or free of errors. Pages go down, links rot, and a story that was right last month may need reading in light of what happened since.

To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from your use of the site — for example, a decision you took on the strength of a headline without reading the article behind it. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law, and nothing here limits rights you have as a reader under the law that applies to you.

Keeping this page current

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, and the current version will always be published on this page with a revised effective date. The date sits at the top of this page, so you can see at a glance whether anything has moved since your last visit.

Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised terms. If a change narrows what you may do with our reporting, we will say so plainly rather than slipping it into a rewritten paragraph. If you do not accept a revision, stop using the site.

Common questions

Questions readers send us

These are the four that come up most often about the terms. Anything else goes to the newsroom.

Can I quote an article in my own writing?

Yes, for criticism, comment or news reporting, as long as the source is credited and linked where practical. Quote the passage you are actually discussing and send readers to the original for the rest.

What happens if I spot an error?

Write to NicholasWillis@vinnykeates.com with the page address and the point you think is wrong. We look at every message and correct the article when a correction is warranted.

Can I republish a full article on my own site?

Not without permission. Send a note describing where the piece would run and how the source would be shown, and we will tell you whether it can go ahead. Requests are handled on their own terms.

Do these terms change how my data is handled?

No. Data and cookies are covered separately. Read the Privacy Policy for how information is collected and the Cookie Policy for what is stored on your device.
